UMT Emerges as a Strategic National Contributor in Electronic Warfare and Defense Innovation
Monday, May 12 2025
At a time of heightened national challenges and renewed focus on indigenous technological advancement, the University of Management and Technology (UMT) stands proudly at the forefront of academic institutions contributing to Pakistan’s strategic and defense capabilities. Through a long-standing commitment to high-impact research, UMT continues to play a quiet but decisive role in strengthening the nation’s scientific ecosystem—especially in the field of electronic warfare, sensor fusion, and radar technologies.
A major symbol of this commitment is the landmark achievement by, Mr. Faran Awais Butt, who was awarded the first-ever U.S. patent in Electronic Warfare issued to a Pakistani while serving at UMT in 2015.
In a powerful act of national service, this innovation was presented at Air Headquarters and the patent was dedicated to Pakistan’s defense architecture, marking UMT as the institutional incubator of this breakthrough.
This pioneering achievement was nurtured under the visionary academic leadership of the late Dr. Hasan Sohaib Murad, whose dedication to strategic research transformed UMT into a launchpad for innovation that extends far beyond classroom learning.
UMT’s role in shaping national defense scholarship has continued to deepen. In 2023–2024, Mr. Butt served as Principal Investigator for a NESCOM-funded national R&D project at UMT—further establishing the university’s credibility as a trusted partner in defense-related research.
With previous engagements in radar and electronic warfare during MS and PhD (co-supervised by Air Commodore Dr. Usman Riaz), and frequent co-authorship with NESCOM-affiliated scientists, UMT’s research output remains intimately aligned with national strategic priorities.
UMT’s research culture has not only produced patents and defense collaborations but has also earned recognition at federal levels, including the Young Leaders Development Award awarded to Mr. Butt by the Ministry of Planning, Development, and Reforms—a powerful endorsement of UMT’s influence on national development.
As UMT continues to invest in frontier areas such as artificial intelligence, radar systems, and cyber-physical infrastructure, it stands tall as a university with purpose—educating minds, fostering patriotism, and enabling Pakistan’s scientific sovereignty.
President Ibrahim Murad on the occasion said, “Institutions rise when their people commit to service beyond self. And nations rise when their universities become engines of truth, innovation, and transformation.”
UMT’s alumni and faculty are now contributing across the globe. Mr. Butt is currently based at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM), Saudi Arabia, conducting postdoctoral research on Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC)—an emerging field that merges radar and wireless technologies.
His journey, beginning from the classrooms and laboratories of UMT, is a powerful validation of the university’s lasting academic and strategic impact.
As Pakistan looks to the future, UMT reaffirms its role as an institution where knowledge meets duty, and where research transforms into national resilience.
