Inaugural Session of 1st International Conference on Safe Drinking Water Governance (SDWG) 2019

The School of Governance and Society (SGS) at UMT organized a two-day International Conference on Safe Drinking Water Governance at Avari Hotel, Lahore on January 15-16, 2019. The conference is being attended by a large number of academicians, scholars, students, faculty, researchers, and public and private sector members.

While addressing the inaugural session, Rahat ul Ain, Director SGS, warmly welcomed the participants and guests. Seemi Waheed, Assistant Professor, SGS, discussed conference objectives in detail. Zartaj Gul, Minister for Climate Change, graced the event with her presence as a chief guest. Dr Muhammad Aslam also attended the inaugural session and appreciated the efforts of the organizing team.

The SDWG provided an opportunity to deepen the understanding of the subject under the SDGs and facilitate collaborative deliberation and action around sustainable management. One of the objectives of the Conference was to bring academic and policy researchers, policy practitioners, policymakers, communities, NGOs, etc., together to develop the common understanding on issues related to safe drinking water available to all and explore means for effective governance in the area.

It helped the researchers to explore possible ways and methodologies to ensure the effectiveness of safe drinking water governance and infrastructure for equitable availability across rural and urban dwellings. It also contemplated and proposed measures, processes, and mechanisms for healthy community participation in improving water and sanitation conditions. It also provided a critical forum for future discourse, dialogue, and debate as well as the opportunity for networking among the range of stakeholders for continued deliberations to address the issue.
