Dr Hasan Sohaib Murad Impact PhD Fellowship

1.  Purpose

The Dr Hasan Sohaib Murad PhD fellowship will be offered to outstanding, young, full-time students for completion of PhD studies in a period of 3 to 4 years in specific areas of specialization. The objective is to support the education and grooming of outstanding young scholars who would excel in high-quality research and its publication in the most reputable journals of the subject.

2.  PhD Fellowship

  1. The recipients of the PhD fellowship will receive a monthly stipend of Rs. 60,000/- up to three years.
  2. No tuition fee will be charged to the recipients of the fellowship.
  3. The PhD Scholars shall complete the required PhD course work in the first year.
  4. The PhD Scholars shall teach two courses per semester during the second and third year. Alternatively, he/she may be required to work as “Research Associate”.
  5. Continuation of the fellowship shall be subject to satisfactory performance.
  6. The scholars will be encouraged to complete the degree in three years.

3.  Eligibility Requirements

Required Qualification: MS / M Phil (18 years of education) with good marks/grades / CGPA throughout the academic career. Preference would be given to the candidates who have published their research articles in HEC-recognized journals as a first or second author.

Age: Less than or equal to 40 years on 15th of October of the year of admission

Submission of a comprehensive Research Proposal
The candidates for the Dr Hasan Sohaib Murad PhD Fellowship shall be required to submit at the outset a comprehensive research proposal for their PhD research plans.

4.  Admission Criteria

Performance in Certificates & Degrees

  • Matric / O-level (minimum marks: 75%)
  • F.A. / F.Sc. / A-level (minimum marks: 70%)
  • 4- or 5-year BS (minimum CGPA: 3.25)
  • 2-year MS or M Phil with thesis research (minimum CGPA: 3.5)
  • Assessment by Subject-based Interview
  • Assessment of General Intelligence and Attitude

5.  Determination of Merit for Admission

Performance in Certificates & Degrees
The performance shall be quantified by the Figure of Merit defined below. Figure of Merit (FoM) = 2x (%age in Matric ÷ 100) + 2x (%age in F.A. or F.Sc. ÷ 100) + 3x (CGPA in BS ÷ 4.0) + 3x (CGPA in MS / M Phil ÷ 4.0). The maximum possible value of FoM is 10.0.

Assessment by Subject-based Interview (ASI)
The special committee of the School will assess the candidates in the subject of their PhD studies on a scale of zero to ten.

Assessment of General Intelligence and Attitude (AGIA)
The university-wide assessment committee chaired by Rector will assess the general intelligence and attitude of the candidates on a scale of zero to ten.

Determination of the Comprehensive Merit
The Figure of Comprehensive Merit (FoCM) will be used to determine the overall merit of the candidates. FoCM will be determined by the following formula:

FoCM = 5.5 x (FoM) + 3.0 x (ASI) + 1.5 x (AGIA)

The maximum value of FoCM can be 100.

6.  Terms and Conditions for Continuation of Fellowship

A recipient of the PhD fellowship:

  1. shall complete the required PhD course work in the first year of studies.
  2. shall be required to obtain a CGPA of 3.5 or more during his / her coursework.
  3. must pass the PhD Comprehensive Exam within 1.5 years.
  4. shall not be eligible for extended leave during the regular semesters.
  5. is required to be on campus full-time, dedicating at least 8 hours per day to their academic and research activities.
  6. is required to actively participate in research activities such as seminars, workshops, conferences, and research training sessions.
  7. is required to publish at least one research paper in an HEC-recognized international journal each year during the tenure of the fellowship.
  8. shall present research at a well-reputed conference each year during the tenure of the fellowship.
  9. shall acknowledge UMT affiliation in all publications and be in line with the fellowship recipient’s research area.
  10. shall engage in mentorship and skill development activities.
  11. shall uphold the ethical and conduct standards of UMT.
  12. shall not be eligible for additional monetary incentives on publications, based on UMT’s research reward policy.

7.  Termination

The fellowship may be terminated if the recipient:

  • Fails to maintain required academic standards.
  • Withdraws from the program without prior approval.
  • Commits misconduct or engages in criminal activity.
  • Provides false or misleading information at any stage.

In case of termination, the recipient may be required to refund the fellowship amount disbursed by the university.

8.  Supervisor Eligibility

  • Only UMT-approved supervisors are allowed to supervise the Fellowship holders.
  • Must be an Associate Professor or above
  • Must have supervised at least 3 PhD students
  • Must have published 08 W-category publications in the last 3 years (pure & applied Science)
  • 2 W-category or 5 X-category publications in the last 3 years (Social Sciences/ Humanities)
  • Preference will be given to those having funded projects and a high H-index
