Dr Hasan Sohaib Murad Impact MS/MPhil Fellowship

1. Purpose

The UMT MS/MPhil Fellowship aims to support outstanding students in pursuing advanced education by offering financial assistance. This initiative is designed to strengthen postgraduate programs, attract high-caliber students, and support the production of impactful research that contributes to societal well-being.

2. Fellowship Benefits

Selected students will receive:

  • Full tuition fee waiver and will receive a monthly stipend of Rs. 30,000/- up to two years.
  • Research Assistantship opportunities
  • Teach one undergraduate course per semester in both years
  • Participation in structured mentorship programs and career development workshops

3.  Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Hold a four-year Bachelor's degree or Master's degree with a minimum CGPA of 3.5/4.0.
  • Fulfill all admission requirements of the university and its respective program.
  • Be under 40 years of age at the time of application (exceptions may be considered under special circumstances).
  • Not be availing of any other scholarship or financial assistance (Merit-based or Need-based).
  • Be willing to serve as a Research Assistant and/or teach one undergraduate course per semester.
  • Full-time student with plans to complete the degree in two years

4. Admission Criteria

Performance in Certificates & Degrees

  • Matric / O-level (minimum marks: 75%)
  • F.A. / F.Sc. / A-level (minimum marks: 70%)
  • 4- or 5-year BS (minimum CGPA: 3.5/4.0)

Performance in Test

  • UGAT: minimum 60% marks
  • Assessment by Subject-based Interview
  • Assessment of General Intelligence and Attitude

5. Determination of Merit for Admission

Performance in Certificates & Degrees
The performance shall be quantified by the Figure of Merit defined below. Figure of Merit (FoM) = 3x (%age in Matric ÷ 100) + 3x (%age in F.A. or F.Sc. ÷ 100) + 4 x (CGPA in BS ÷ 4.0). The maximum possible value of FoM is 10.0.

Assessment by Subject-based Interview (ASI)
The special committee of the school will assess candidates in the subject of their MS/MPhil studies on a scale of 0 to 10.

Assessment of General Intelligence and Attitude (AGIA)
The university-wide assessment committee will evaluate the general intelligence and attitude of the candidates on a scale of 0 to 10.

Determination of the Comprehensive Merit
The Figure of Comprehensive Merit (FoCM) will be used to determine the overall merit of the candidates. FoCM will be determined by the following formula:

FoCM = 5.5 x (FoM) + 3.0 x (ASI) + 1.5 x (AGIA)

The maximum value of FoCM can be 100.

6. Application Requirements

Applicants must submit:

  • Completed Scholarship Application Form
  • Copies of all academic transcripts and degrees
  • Updated Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Statement of Purpose/Research Statement (maximum 500 words)
  • Two academic/reference letters

7. Selection Process

  • Initial Screening: Eligibility verification and document review.
  • Shortlisting: Based on academic excellence, research potential, and alignment with UMT’s priority research areas.
  • Interviews: Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview.
  • Final Approval: Decisions made by the Scholarship Committee chaired by Rector will be final and binding.

8. Obligations of Fellowship Holders

Fellowship recipients must:

  • Maintain full-time enrollment (dedicating at least 8 hours per day to their academic and research activities) and satisfactory academic progress.
  • Achieve a minimum CGPA of 3.25 in each semester.
  • Actively participate in research activities such as seminars, workshops, conferences, and research training sessions.
  • Publish at least one research paper in an HEC-recognized international journal each year during the tenure of the fellowship.
  • Present at least one research paper in a well-reputed conference each year during the tenure of the fellowship.
  • Engage in mentorship and skill development activities.
  • These publications/ presentations must acknowledge UMT affiliation and be in line with the student's research area.
  • Uphold the ethical and conduct standards of UMT.
  • Complete the program within a maximum period of 2.5 years (fellowship support will be available for a maximum of 2 years only).
  • Students who publish research papers during their MS/MPhil studies will not be eligible for additional monetary incentives, based on UMT’s research reward policy.

9. Termination

The fellowship may be terminated if the recipient:

  • Fails to maintain required academic standards.
  • Withdraws from the program without prior approval.
  • Commits misconduct or engages in criminal activity.
  • Provides false or misleading information at any stage.

In case of termination, the recipient may be required to refund the fellowship amount disbursed by the university.

10.  Supervisor Eligibility

  • Only UMT-approved supervisors are allowed to supervise the Fellowship holders.
  • Must have supervised 5 MPhil Students
  • Must be an Associate Professor or above
  • Must have published 5 W-category publications in the last 3 years (Basic/Applied Science), 1W or three X-category publications in the last 3 years (Social Sciences/Humanities)
  • Preference will be given to those having active research profiles and student mentorship.
