Dr Sammia Shahid Attends Workshop on Leaders in Science and Innovation Policy at LUMS

Dr Sammia Shahid, Associate Professor and Dean Research, School of Science (SSC), UMT, attended a 3-day workshop for policymakers, academic leaders and faculty titled ‘Leaders in Science and Innovation Policy’ at School of Sciences and Engineering (SSE), Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) from July 28-30, 2018. The workshop was conducted by Planning Commission of Pakistan in Collaboration with the Higher Education Commission (HEC). It was attended by 30+ senior leaders from the academia, government and public sectors.
The workshop was led by Ehsan Masood, Knight Science Journalism Fellow at MIT and a former Editor of the prestigious science journal Nature in the United Kingdom, and Dr Athar Osama, Member of Science and Technology at the Planning Commission who is a recognized authority on Science in the Muslim World.
The workshop covered a wide range of subjects and topics of science and innovation policy, such as history and evolution of science policy around the world, science policy making processes, scientific advice, commercialization and impact, measurement of science, and scientific ethics, among others.
Dr Tariq Banuri, Chairman, Higher Education Commission (HEC), emphasized on the conditions and requirements of making science more relevant to policy and how to address the trust deficit between the policymaker and the scientific community.
